
What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
This is the ability to understand, use and manage your own emotions in positive ways so as to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and manage conflicts.
Emotional Intelligence helps you:
• Build stronger relationships, succeed at school and work so as to achieve your career and personal goals.
• It can also help you connect with your feelings, turn thoughts into action and assist in making decisions on what matters most to you.
EQ is commonly defined by five attributes:
Personal competences
( These competences determine how we manage ourselves)
i. Self-awareness – Knowing one’s internal state, preferences, resource and intentions
ii. Self-regulation – managing one’s internal states impulses, resources
iii. Motivation – Emotional tendencies that guide or facilitate reaching goals
Social Competences
(These competences determine how we handle relationships)
iv. Empathy – Awareness of others feelings, needs and concerns
v. Social Skills – Adeptness in inducing desirable responses in others.
