Executive Edge Consulting spoke to several top executives from different industries in Nairobi and they were very specific about what they want from the people and teams they work with.

We would like to share with you what they deemed critical to selecting one to join their teams.

Attitude & Ability to Work with Others

According to the Nulands Africa Ltd CEO, attitude is a major deciding feature on whom they hire to work in their firm.

“… We look for people with a good attitude, people who are willing to learn, and people who are team players. More often than not people with a good attitude are also team players; [they] are people who can work with others. We don’t emphasize on lone rangers or people who want to work by themselves.”

Leadership Ability

Our Managing Consultant, Esther Nderitu, has been a hiring manager for years now and one of the things she is keen on finding out during interviews is the leadership experience of interviewees. This does not necessarily have to be in the workplace.

“Maybe you were the chair lady of the French Club at your high school or the Captain of your football team. These are both great leadership examples to include during your interview.”

The Commercial Director of Proctor & Gamble, East and Central Africa shares the same sentiment.

“…When we do interviews we interview everybody in the same way unless we’re hiring for a very specific and a very specialized area. We hire straight from university. We essentially want someone with a first degree, and that’s enough. The key thing we look for is your leadership. How well do you lead?”

Innovative Mindset

Companies cannot grow without innovation which is the reason why every growing firm looks for innovative people to join them. Innovation is essentially improving an already-existing product or service to give even better solutions to the customer.

“One of the things we look at is if you have a mindset that allows you to innovate and take a situation which people have seen over and over again and get insights from it.” – Commercial Director, East and Central Africa, Proctor & Gamble.

A vision cannot come to fruition without the right team. Cultural fit, skills and abilities must all be carefully considered for the success of the company and the achievement of the vision and mission.
