The CEO of Basecamp Explorer Kenya is very keen on the people he has working for him. In this article we have broken down the three things that he feels a team must have in order to achieve success in whatever they set out to do.

Clear Understanding of the Goal/Purpose of the Team

“One of the skills or the key things I look for is if the team members understand the goals of the team. It’s important for me as a leader that the team I am leading or the team I am participating in knows the goal or purpose of being in that team. One thing I quickly test is, “Do you really understand what goal we have and where we’re heading?”

It’s not just the top-level executives and management who need to understand where the company is going. Everyone in the company down to the intern should have a sense of direction while working at the company.

Individual Skills/Strengths

“A team is made up of players. The team participants should complement one another. One question you should ask yourself is, “What can you bring to the table?” Ideally, teams should be made up of different personalities because they each have different strengths. Where certain traits are lacking in one group of personalities, they are present in another group.

Ask yourself, “At individual level, what skills do I have?”

As an employee, leverage your personality and individual strengths and always seek ways to make the team better. Individual effort is not what great companies or any team for that matter is made of.

Motivation

“It is important for me that you’re motivated to achieve the goal. There are so many things you can look for in a team, but one of the most important for me is motivation.”

In summary, first understand the goal, make sure you have the right skills to benefit the team as a whole, and remain motivated to achieve the goal. Executive Edge Consulting specializes in team building & training both of which are geared towards helping teams work better together to achieve the goals and vision of a company.

There are so many different ways you can get candidates for open positions at your company whether it is referrals from your peers, family and friends, social media advertising, or using recruitment firm like Executive Edge Consulting.
