It may be a boring exercise but it’s a necessary one, if you miss it then chances of you missing out or messing up on other things in the future are high.

Your ever ask yourself why form one students and ‘freshas’ are taken through orientation? You may be there to stay, but you need to know how things are done. All new employees, interns and anybody who is expected to work or stay in any place should be inducted.

To avoid going into the opposite gender’s washrooms and disturbing the receptionist on simple things here are the reasons why you should be inducted:

It’s a legal requirement

Yes, the labor law requires that new employees be taken through an induction program to familiarize themselves with the institution.

Organization’s structure and protocol

Every institution has a protocol to be observed which follows a certain structure. New employees should be taken through this to ensure good flow of information and responsibilities.  A new employee should know to whom exactly they report to, who report to them and who is responsible for handling different things in the organization.

This improves the productivity of the employee as it enables him/her to fit into the organization in the shortest time possible.

Key departments and individuals

Organizations have key departments that every employee should be familiar with, in other institutions, there are individuals who deal with key activities and handle most of the operations. During inductions, new employees should familiarize themselves with these departments and individuals to help them as they go about their daily activities.

Right information

As a new employee, you are expected to receive a lot of information concerning your responsibilities. Some will be given to you on your first day in office while you are expected to get the rest as you go about your duties. Induction makes it easy for new employees   to know where to get the right information when they need.

Sense of acceptance

Induction includes introducing the employee physically to his/her colleagues, junior and senior staff of the organization. When one meets his workmates he/she feels accepted in the workplace. It makes him know who is who and avoid meeting new faces each and every day.

Workplace safety

You ever imagined what would happen in case of fire at your work place? Do you know how to handle the extinguisher? Where to rush to? If No, then your induction was incomplete and you need to be re-inducted.

All new employees during induction should know how to handle safety equipment, where to go to incase of danger. If there is any first aid training that needs to be done, then this is the right time to do it.

Next time you get into a new institution make sure you attend the induction program to avoid being confused and feeling awkward as people go about their activities without you knowing what is going on. A good induction program is a sign of good employee relations in the organization.
